The Panchakarma Procedure – Ayurveda

Ayurvedic Panchakarma is a well-known practice in Ayurveda, but many people lack knowledge about it. It involves removing disease-causing elements from the body without surgery through five main methods known as Pancha Karma. These methods are Vamana Karma (vomiting therapy), Nasya Karma (nasal therapy), Virechana (purgation therapy), Vasti Karma (enema therapy), and Raktamochana (bloodletting therapy).

It is not advisable to do Pancha Karma at home because it is a complex process that requires proper preparation of the patient for 1-2 weeks before the main karma. This preparation is called Purva Karma, and after the main karma, the patient must be taken care of for another 1-2 weeks. This entire process must be done under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician to avoid unwanted side effects.

Contrary to popular belief, massaging with oil is not a Pancha Karma but a preparatory action, which involves applying oil and sweating. Although some people outside the medical profession perform oiling as a commercial process, it is important to note that only a qualified doctor can cure a disease using oil therapy.

In future articles, we will discuss the five karmas in detail to provide a better understanding of Ayurvedic Panchakarma.
